Family and Friends:

On a recent evening, I was approached in a grocery store parking lot by a man, perhaps in his 40’s. He said that the campsite where he and his wife had been living was swept by the city and that they would appreciate a little help. Those of you in Denver metro are likely familiar with the continuing saga of homeless encampments.

I asked if he was familiar with the Samaritan House, and I mentioned my inclination to help neighbors in his predicament by supporting the Sam House programs. He responded that he ‘doesn't do f’ing shelters’, and walked away.

Several times in recent weeks, while walking in downtown Denver, I have encountered individuals who were seemingly incoherent and inside their own heads. None weren’t especially threatening, but each encounter still gave me pause.

However, in my interactions with folks who I have met at the Samaritan House, I consistently find them to be there with a purpose. To take a step or two forward, while trying hard not to take too many steps back. To be there with gratitude for the respect they are shown by Sam House staff and volunteers.

I don’t know that I can do much to improve the destinies of the homeless who prefer life on the streets. Nor, can I change the circumstances of the so many homeless among us tormented by mental illness. But I do believe that through the Samaritan House, I can make a difference for those individuals and families on the streets who endeavor to move towards a more sustainable life.

That’s why I am proud to be part of Team Samaritan House for a 7th consecutive year, in - as is says on our jerseys…. Providing Help, Creating Hope.
